Families come in all different sizes and types these days… large ones and small ones, families with one parent and some with two moms or two dads. Many times the grandparents also come along on vacation. And let us assure you, there’s a resort for everyone!
To make the search a little easier, we’ve selected a few of our favourite family resorts – ones that waive single supplements, are gay friendly, are great for grandparents and more. Check it out!
1. Nuclear & Blended Families
These families can be large or small, with young kids, tweens and teens… so you need a resort that is great value with a lot to offer. Here are couple of suggestions:
The IBEROSTAR Bavaro offers something for everyone in your group, from kids’ clubs to nightclubs, along with a giant swimming pool that overlooks the ocean. With well-appointed guestrooms situated in easy-to-access two-storey bungalows, as well as the resort’s close proximity (just a 20-minute ride) to the airport, this all-inclusive is sure to keep everyone happy and having fun. Guests of this resort also enjoy access to the amenities at the neighbouring sister resorts, including expanded choice when it comes to dining.
Located close to Castries on St. Lucia’s lush northwest coast, Windjammer Landing offers a Mediterranean feel in a relaxed, tropical setting. Offering a range of one to four-bedroom villas that feature full kitchens, comfortable living spaces, large bedrooms and even washers and dryers, combined with all-inclusive perks such as kids’ programs, water sports, restaurants and more, families of all sizes can easily travel together and enjoy the home-away-from-home feel offered here.
2. Single Parent Families
There are a number of resorts that cater to the single parent segment offering savings in the form of no single supplement, reduced rates or even free stays for the kids – here are just a couple:
Stretch out and enjoy day after day of fun in the sun at this amazing all-inclusive resort. Located in picturesque La Romana – a destination that wonderfully combines European charm with Caribbean ease – at the Grand Bahia Principe La Romana you and the kids will enjoy the very best of island life. It all starts at the gorgeous long beach and the calm inviting ocean and just gets better from there! Guests here enjoy spacious accommodations in junior suites, a wide range of activities and entertainment, including a great kids’ club, a large freeform pool, a variety of culinary options and more. There’s also a spa on-site and golf nearby.
Surrounded by lush tropical vegetation and overlooking the Bay of Banderas, the Grand Palladium Vallarta Resort & Spa is already off to a great start based on the scenery alone! 3. Same-Sex Parent Families
More and more resorts are opening their doors to all moms and dads out there, including the two listed below, which we particularly like:
The Hard Rock Hotels in Mexico and the Dominican Republic are among the most gay- and family-friendly resorts out there. Along with welcoming all types of families, the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya (along with its sister property in Cancun) is among just a few all-inclusive resorts in the region that perform same-sex civil wedding ceremonies, making it a great option for a destination wedding with the entire family! Guests of this all-inclusive resort enjoy rock star treatment in a luxurious and lively atmosphere, including a great beach, extensive pool area, decadent food and fun activities day and night.
Known as a very gay-friendly destination, a vacation in Curaçao is a great choice for families with same-sex parents and the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort & Emerald Casino is a great place to stay. Offering the best of old Amsterdam charm combined with the island’s sun-drenched warmth, this beachfront resort offers lovely accommodations, great dining, newly renovated pool facilities, many outdoor activities and, of course, the on-site casino for when you want to enjoy a night out. Guests also have access to complimentary transportation to downtown Willemstad twice a day.
4. Cross-Generational Families
Looking for a resort that caters to your six-year-old child as well as it does to your 70-year-old parent can seem like a daunting task, but there are plenty out there! Here are just a couple that we like:
Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa in St. Lucia offers family and adults-only accommodations and pools, making it a viable option for multigenerational vacations. It is also home to St. Lucia’s largest waterpark, complete with a lazy river and two giant waterslides, perfect for kids and kids-at-heart! You can also really up the ante and the action at the on-site paintball facility, the kite and windsurfing centre, kids’ club and seven restaurants. Even better, this all-inclusive resort is conveniently located just five minutes from the airport.
This family-friendly property offers both great value and great services and amenities. For families there is a dedicated section that features its own restaurants, waterpark, main pool and a ‘chill out’ pool, a kids’ club and a variety of eco-activities that are not only fun but educational too! Families also have choice when it comes to accommodations – there are standard rooms, deluxe rooms with Jacuzzis, and junior suites with Jacuzzis. There is also an adults-only section that features a dedicated pool, a dedicated restaurant for breakfast and lunch, an exclusive section of beach and its own bar. Guestrooms at this resort are in three-storey buildings, with no elevators, so if there are any mobility issues be sure to ask for a ground floor room.
